Price based on private excursions with personal vehicle and guide (no group excursions) and 2 to 3-star hotels.
Visit with us the small city of Chachapoyas, which - incomprehensibly – has not been in the focus of tourism. Up here in the mountains you will feel the nearby rainforest, hence the climate during the day is rather mild. Take a hike to the third highest waterfall in the world, discover old cemeteries way up in the rocky cliffs of the mountains and as a highlight visit the old city ruins of Kuelap.
Day 1: Hike to the Gocta waterfall
Day 2: Drive towards Leymebamba and hike up to the mausoleum of Revash
Day 3: Visit the archeological site Kuelap
Early drive towards the waterfall of Gotca with your own personal guide and vehicle. From the small village of Cocachimba a beautiful hike through the cloud forest takes you to the third highest waterfall in the world. The force of the falling water coats the surrounding landscape into a permanent mist – don´t forget your raincoat! (Hotel in Chachapoyas)
A two hour drive to the south of Chachapoyas brings you to the starting point of today’s hike. A short but strenuous hike uphill takes you to a rock cliff where ancient cultures have carved little, colorful “houses” into the stone. These graves which were probably carved in the 14th century form a small village of the dead. In the afternoon you will drive on to Leymebamba where you will visit the archeological museum. The well preserved mummies which were found in the area will impress you just as much as the ceramic treasures of the Chachapoyas culture. (Hotel in Leymebamba)
In the morning you will drive to Nuevo Tingo where you will ride the only aerial cableway of Peru to the ruins of Kuelap. This fortress which was established around 1000 AD is one of the most important archeological sites of Peru. The complex is surrounded by a wall which reaches a height of up to 68 feet. Inside you will find geometrically adorned houses, huge watch towers as well as a mysterious construction called the “inkpot”. In the afternoon you will head back to Chachapoyas.
